Inspiration can strike you at the most random of times. So it is wise to keep a digital scrap book. Mine is merely a folder on my desktop, simply called ‘Inspiration’. In this folder I have a few different sub folders, graphics, logos, typography etc, and at any time whilst browsing the web, if I see something inspiring, it goes into my scrap book.

So, as an insight into the type of things I save, I have chosen twenty of my favorite artworks to share with you. The reason I love each one is not necessarily the final edit where everything comes together to make a picture, but sometimes it is just the concept of what is possible with Photoshop. You see something somebody has done and it makes you adapt the technique to suit your work. So don’t always assess each image as a flat picture. Try to envision the effects used to create it, it will add far more value to your scrap book!

Step 1

Ok, lets get started. The first thing we need to do is set up our file. I like to work in as large a resolution as I can, then scale down after wards. I think this way a lot of the editing becomes smoother and less obvious. I have opted for 1500 x 2250 pixels at 300dpi. You can follow this tutorial in smaller resolutions if you wish, it will just take some tweaking with the effects. Make sure that its a 6×4 ratio and regardless of the resolution it will look roughly the same.

Next, double click the Background Layer and Click OK to unlock it. Rename the Layer “Background” once more (as it will switch to layer 0) then Fill it with Black.

Step 2

Next open the Texture file and Paste it into the document. Name the layer “Texture” and position it near the bottom, it doesn’t matter too much about positioning at this point as we can move it around later.

Create a new layer and name it “Spectrum”. Then choose the Gradient Tool. Choose the spectrum with the clear sides from the drop down menu at the top.

Drag the Gradient Tool from top left to bottom right.

Set the Layer Style to Multiply and the Opacity to 50%.

Create a New Layer and name it Focal Point. Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool. Set the Feather to 100px in the top bar and draw out a circle holding the Shift Key to keep it perfectly round.

Choose Select > Inverse Selection and Fill with Black.

And thats the Background Set Up

Step 3

Next paste in the picture of the girl and name the layer “Model”. Go to Edit > Free Transform and scale her up to a reasonable size.

Now, zoom in and choose the Pen Tool (P). Use a series of points to draw around the outline of the model. You can use Alt and select points to cancel curves.

Once you have mapped out the entire edge of your model, choose the ‘Load Path As Selection’ Button from the Paths Window. If you cannot find the Paths Window it can be found under Window > Paths.

Once you have your girl selected choose Select > Refine Edge. The idea here it so get the selection looking as crisp as possible. I personally am not a massive fan of feathering, or tampering with these settings too much. Less is More when it comes to Refine Edge. You can see from the picture below I use minimal settings.

Once you have your selection, choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection to remove the background.

Step 4

Duplicate the Model Layer and name it “Model Blur”. Chose Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. Set the Amount to 100, The Method to Zoom and the Quality to Best.

Move the Blur Layer below the Model Layer. Choose the Model Layer, then select the Model Blur Layer whilst holding down the Shift Key, CMD+Click (Right-Click) and choose Link Layers. This will just keep the two together should you want to move them about.

Next choose the Brush Tool and choose a large soft brush. I used a 400px round brush with 0% hardness. Select the layer mask on the Model Layer and just fade out the legs of the girl using the colour Black.

Step 5

Next paste in the Shattered Glass stock image. Name the layer “Shattered Glass 1″ and position it behind the girl. Set the Blend Mode to Screen.

Paste it in once more and name the layer “Shattered Glass 2″. Place it above the Model Layer. Use the Free Transform Tool to rotate and position it. Set the Blend Mode to Lighten.

Set the Blend Mode to Screen, and choose > Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Then use a Hard Brush and the colour Black to remove some of the fragmented glass.

Step 6

Next create a new layer under the Model Blur Layer and name it “Background Clouds 1″. Use some of the cloud brush set and the colour white, to add some clouds behind the model. Change the blend mode on this layer to Overlay. I repeated this for three layers naming each one appropriately. I use different layers as you can free transform and position each one individually.

Next, create another new layer above the Model Layer and call it “Foreground Clouds 1″. Again use White and the Cloud Brushes to create some clouds in front of our girl. Leave the Blend Mode as normal and name each layer appropriately.

Step 7

Now, the girls elbow was off the side of the picture. So we are going to use a burst of light to hide this flaw. Create a new layer, at the very top and call it “Elbow Cover”. Use a Soft Brush and White and simply drop it over the top of the cut off elbow.

Next, create a new layer below the Model Layer and name it “Elbow Overlay”. Use a soft white brush again, but make it larger than in the previous step. Set the Blend Mode to Overlay to add a bit of depth the the light burst.

Step 8

Create a new layer below Elbow Cover and name it “Streak Foreground”. Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Draw and fill a series of different sized rectangles right across the layer.

Next use the Free Transform Tool to angle and position the rectangles.

Choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Set the angle and the amount so that it blur’s but does not lose all of the detail.

Set the Blend Mode to Overlay

Step 9

Create a new layer just below Shattered Glass 1 and name it “Background Streak” and create another series of White Rectangles. Stretch them over the sides of the Focal Point.

Again set the Blend Mode to Overlay

Step 10

Create a new layer and name it Spatter. Position it below the Elbow Overlay Layer. Now we are going to be flicking between two layers here, so make sure you don’t get confused or you could be destroying the Model Layer. Choose the Clone Stamp Tool (S) and choose one of the Splatter Brushes. Now choose the Model Layer, hold down ALT and choose the face of the model. Now make sure you go back to your Spatter Layer before you drop the brush down on it. If you are sure, drop your Brush on the Spatter Layer.

Repeat the previous step all the way down one side of the Model.

Duplicate the layer. It doesn’t matter about renaming it as we are going to merge it with the other one. Simply choose Edit > Free Transform. Now CMD-Click (Right-Click) the selection and choose Flip Horizontal. Then position it on the opposite side of the girl so the spatter is surrounding her.

Now choose the Spatter Layer, hold down the Shift Key and choose the Spatter Copy Layer. CMD-Click (Right-Click) and choose Merge Layers. They will now both be part of one layer, name it Spatter if it is not already.

Step 11

Duplicate the Spatter Layer and name it “Spatter Blur 1″. Choose Filter > Blur > Radial Blur, and just like last time use 100 as the Amount, Zoom as the Method and High as the Quality.

Duplicate the Spatter Blur 1 layer and name it “Spatter Blur 2″. Position them both beneath the Spatter Layer.

Step 12

Now for a few filters to make the lighting a bit more fitting. Choose the Model Layer, and then choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter. Tick the box that says “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask”.

Set the Colour to Pink. The Density to 25% and Tick Preserve Luminosity. Name the layer “Model Pink”.

Step 13

Now choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels. again Tick the box that says “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask”. Set the right hand White arrow to 199. Name the layer “Model Levels”.

Step 14

Now once more choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter. This time DO NOT tick the box. Again set the colour to Pink, the Density to 25% and Preserve Luminosity. Name the layer “Warm Pink”. This filter will be applied to the entire artwork, which is why we did not check the Clipping Mask box.

Step 15

Now all we have left to do is sign it. Choose a Font of your choice. Type in White and set the Blend Mode to Overlay. Position your text and we are finished.

I would once again like to thank Sara Coulson for the use of her images. She provides me with such high quality and professional images, so that you guys can experience a much cleaner tutorial. Be sure to check out her work on Facebook.

Step 1

Load your stock image into Photoshop, name the layer “Stock Image” and choose the Pen Tool (P). Using a series of clicks draw a path around your subject. Take your time when doing this, a rushed selection will most definitely lower the quality of your work.

Once you have done this choose Window > Paths and hit the Load Path as Selection Button.

Step 2

With your subject selected, choose Select > Refine Edge. Choose your settings wisely, abuse of the feather function leads to a poor overall finish.

Click OK then choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection to remove the background.

Step 3

Next, create a new layer beneath the Stock Image layer and name it “Shadow”. Take a Round Brush and set the Hardness to 0%. Choose a reasonably dark gray colour (#707070), and draw in some shadows.

Set the opacity to 60% and choose Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. Apply a gradient overlay using Dark Gray and Black.

This will make our shadow look a lot less solid, and a bit more realistic. But it still looks too block like. So choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to about 10px and click OK.

Now it looks a lot better.

Step 4

Download the image of the wing. Paste it in our artwork above the Stock Image and position it at the shoulder furthest away from us. Name the layer “BG Wing”.

Duplicate the layer and name it “FG Wing”. Resize and Position this wing at the shoulder closest to us using the Free Transform Tool (Edit > Free Transform).

Now, again use the Free Transform Tool, only this time Ctrl-Click/Right-Click the selection and choose Warp.

Drag the boxes around to add some flex and dimension to the foreground wing.

Once you are happy with this choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Choose the Pen Tool (P) and the colour Black and a Hard Round Brush. Use this to remove the wing around the shoulder blade and back so that it fits more naturally.

Step 5

Create a new layer above the Stock Image layer and name it “Eyes”. Take the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) and draw a circle around each Iris.

Choose the Pen Tool (P) and draw out the areas where the eye is behind the lids or in the shadows.

Once you have done this again choose Window > Paths, only this time when you choose Load Path as Selection hold down the Alt Key. Choose Subtract From Selection.

With the selection done, choose Select > Modify > Feather and set the radius to about 2px.

Now fill the selection with Red.

Again use the Elliptical Marquee Tool, this time use it to remove the Pupil from the centre. You can set the opacity lower temporarily so you can see where to select.

Now obviously our left eye does not have the light reflection, so simply take the colour White, and a Small Soft Brush and add one in.

Step 6

Create a new layer and call it “FG Wing Splash”. Download the Splatter Brush Pack and take the Clone Stamp Tool (S). Select the Stock Image layer, hold down Alt and select an area of her shoulder near the bottom of the wing. Select the FG Wing Splash layer again and using one of the brushes out of the pack. Click to drop a skin splash onto the layer. Position it with the Free Transform Tool.

Download the Water Splash Brushes. Create a new layer and call it “FG Skin Spatter”. Repeat the previous step but use one of the Splash Droplet Brushes. You can use it a few times in different sizes to give it more depth. Use a hard eraser to remove the squareness.

Step 7

Repeat the previous step for the background wing, using the layer names BG Wing Splash and BG Wing Spatter. Position the layers above the BG Wing Layer.

Step 8

Create a new layer and name it “Shoe Splatter”. Do the same technique again, only, this time have it bursting off her shoe.

Step 9

Download the image of the Macaw Feather. Paste it into your document and name it FG Feather.

Use the Magic Wand Tool (W) and set the threshold to 20%. Select the white at the top of the feather.

Refine the edge like we did with our stock image and choose Layer > Layer Mask > Hide Selection.

Use a Soft Round Brush and remove the rest of the white from the base of the feather and the square edge that was left from the background removal.

Choose the layer thumbnail (not the mask) and choose Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Then choose Image > Adjustments > Levels and adjust the levels until the feather roughly matches that of the wings.

Duplicate the layer twice naming them “Left Feather” and “Right Feather”.

Forget about these for now just hide them, and go back to the FG Feather layer, use the Free Transform Tool to Rotate and Scale the feather to the front of the image.

Use the Free Transform Tool again, but use the Warp Feature like we did with the wing earlier and bend the feather into a nice curve.

Next, choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur, add a small amount of motion blur so the feather looks like it is falling in front of the camera.

Step 10

Repeat Step 9 for the left and the right feather and position them in their places using the Free Transform Tool.

Step 11

Create a new layer and name it “Mass Particulate” and using the Clone Stamp Tool (S) and the Spatter Brushes, scale them up a bit and paste some random splashes over the whole image.

Step 12

Now its just a case of adding your logo or your mark to your work.
